Fresh and Authentic Chinese Shabu-Shabu
Chao Shan Beef Taste just opened their first store in Two Valero Building, Valero in Makati this month. This new shabu-shabu place proudly serves authentic Chinese Shabu-Shabu with the freshest beef everyday.
In fact, it’s so fresh that all their meats are served within 6 hours after it’s been butchered. The result? Tender and extra flavorful meat every time. Here are 6 steps on how to have a delightful dining experience at Chao Shan Beef Taste:
1. Thou Shall Not Forget The Dips!
Before anything indulging in their shabu-shabu, thou shall not forget the DIPS! We loved that Chao Shan Beef Taste has a full condiments bar so you can make your own pairing sauce. Choose from three special sauces: Chao Beef (strong + little salty), Satay (mild + sweet), Special Chili (spicy).
I chose both the beef and satay sauces before topping them off with my favorite spring onion and garlic. There’s also minced onion and kinchay for a more aromatic taste. Both sauces were actually pretty good but I liked the sweeter profile of the satay with my meat and soup.
2. Next stop: SOUP
Start your shabu-shabu feast at Chao Shan Beef Taste by choosing your warm soup. Chao Shan offers three options for diners: Beef Bone Stock, Vegetable Stock, or Beef Spareribs Stock.
In our case we had the beef spareribs and vegetable stock. I like my broth thick and flavorful so the beef spareribs was such a delight for me. The meaty savor of the spareribs has really sipped in the soup, giving it a rich flavor.
On the other hand, the vegetable stock was also a new tasty option. A sweet and light variety since it’s actually made with actual coconut juice and meat.
3. GO BEEF CRAZY!
As mentioned, Chao Shan Beef Taste Hotpot takes pride in their ultrafresh selection of beef. Chao Shan’s beef selection includes Chuck Eye, Short Loin, Shank, Brisket Deckle, Chuck Flap, and Beef Ball. We wanted to go all out so we ordered one platter of each!
Which turned out to be a very good call. Because we got to experience all the levels of tenderness and flavors each cut had to offer. And since we had two different broths, we just split the meat from each platter.
- Tip 1: Best to throw in the beef ball first since it takes the longest time to cook. In our case, we were almost halfway through all platters when the beef balls got ready.
- Tip 2: We learned that there’s actually a proper way to cook the other cuts in the shabu-shabu. Once the broth is boiling, pick up some pieces of meat and pass them through the broth two to three times. Once the meat has changed color, then they’re ready to eat. Add flavour with your prepared dip(s).
4. Balance your shabu-shabu with veggies
Balance all that rich and savory flavor of the beef with something light and healthy: veggies. And Chao Shan Beef Hotpot has a variety of these.
Choose from their selection of corn cubs, potato, carrot, enoki mushroom, spinach, lettuce, tofu, and a lot more. Good to have these in between to cleanse the palate and remove any ‘umay’ factor.
5. Complete the Meal with Some Carbs.
Need some carbs to complete all that savor? Go and throw in some flat rice noodle or beef meatball rice noodle into your hotpot.
Or you can also go for their ala carte Chao Shan Fried Rice with Beef or their other cooked viands.
6. Seal the Deal with Refreshing Drinks
We’re more of water-drinkers but we couldn’t resist trying Chao Shan’s selection of unique drinks. According to their staff, top must is the Coconut Drink, which we had. Or you may also opt for their Apple Apple Vinegar Juice, Vita Lemon Tea, Wang Zai Milk.
Overall, Chao Shan Beef Taste ranks number one taste wise in my hotpot/shabu-shabu list, so far. Sure I’ll still enjoy my seafood balls and whatnot but having premium quality beef as flavor base is 100x better. Will definitely be back!
