There is a special place in the Filipino palate for Mediterranean food. The fresh ingredients and tasty combinations play right into our cultural habits, with the same qualities being manifest in our native recipes. But time and again something comes up that mixes Mediterranean with a different concept, making it even better!
Medley falls right into this category. Medley is a grab-and-go food stop in the ground floor of Fully Booked’s BGC branch. It serves primarily Israeli meals, home-style but with a modern twist. Being a grab-and-go concept, customers also have the option to customize their meals.
A quick look, a quick eat
The owner, David Tweg, has said that Medley is mostly geared towards those looking for a quick lunch. But that doesn’t mean anything here is rushed. Not the interior decor, whose aesthetics are pretty eclectic. Even if you’re just here for a few minutes, you’re sure to notice it! It’s colorful, with the wall murals depicting words and scenes straight from books.
I fell in love with the location and the decor since I also love reading books, and I remember spending several hours in Fully Booked just browsing and reading at my leisure. Now I can eat healthy while doing so!
But today, I’m not here to browse through pages, but through the menu! Here’s what I ordered.
Levantine Chicken Rice. This one is really good! The flavors are just right, and you can taste the freshness of the chicken. This is definitely one of my favorites.
Seared Tuna Sashimi Salad. This one felt a bit dry, and it’s lacking in flavor. It wasn’t bad in that sense, but I’ve tasted better.
Guilt-free Greek Salad. The “healthy” banner in the name is a draw, but those with preconceptions of what “guilt-free” should taste like (read: just okay) won’t really be disappointed. Good for those who enjoy healthy food.
Falafel. A bit of trivia… Medley was inspired by a falafel shop opened by David and his father in El Nido. This falafel isn’t that good to my palate, but it’s good enough to bring Medley to life!
Beef Kofta Hummus and Pita. This one isn’t as special as others in the menu… but maybe I just needed to put more sauce?
Levantine Chicken Sandwich. This one’s good, and is really popular with many.
I’m big on sauces, and I really enjoy the sauce that comes with many of Medley’s meals. The dressings are good, and I appreciated the sandwiches, burritos, and pizzas. As for the salads and the falafel… I’m not quite as much of a fan. I might have to go and check it out another time, though. I felt it’s lacking, but maybe I just need another shot.
The price isn’t for everyone, as it’s a bit on the expensive side, but it’s fair for the fare — especially if you’re craving for something fresh. It’s great for those looking for a quick burst of flavor (so long as you steer clear of the salads), and I can guarantee the best parts of the menu belong to such pleasures as reading a good book
