Breakfast Recipes: Maya Hotcake Art
Hotcakes are a classic and beloved breakfast staple. Growing up, my siblings and I would look forward to Sunday mornings because of breakfast: Pancakes + Eggs + Bacon/Spam/Sausage. Whether you like hotcakes as is or with a generous slather of butter and syrup, this spongy breakfast food is a sure hit for the whole family. In the Philippines, there’s one pancake brand a lot of us grew accustomed to: Maya Hotcake. And a few weeks ago, I participated in their Maya Hotcake Art event. Check out how we did. And as a bonus, here are 5 easy pancake ideas that your family will love!
Try the #MayaHotcakeArt Challenge
There’s a multitude of creative ways to whip up hotcakes. And honestly, no one needs to be a master chef or an expert artist to do them! Because Maya Hotcake Mix is wonderfully easy to make, you’ll want to explore fresh and fun ways to cook, plate and eat them.
Here are 5 easy ways you can start making #MayaHotcakeArt at home!
Drizzle on some chocolate syrup!
While we love some good ol’ maple syrup, chocolate syrup or spread is dark and thick enough to draw designs with. Not to mention, the delicious flavor it adds too! Use it to create fun patterns or doodle faces on the hotcakes! I personally tried doing this cute little piggy with round Maya Hotcake batter during the event. Not so bad, right?
Tip 1: Don’t forget to oil up your pan. Just enough so the batter won’t stick to the pan.
Cut your hotcakes into fun shapes!
This one doesn’t even require any effort. Simply use some cookie cutters to turn your hotcakes into stars, animals, and other shapes! You can also make use rubber moulds if you wish. Just don’t forget to oil up your non-stick pan or the insides of the mould/cutter. So the batter won’t stick and popping out the hotcakes will be a breeze. Harvard used a big Mickey Mouse mould to make Ube hotcakes and it was too cute!
Get creative with toppings!
Got some chocolate chips you can use as eyes? Or maybe some whipped cream for a bushy wizard’s beard? Incorporate more sweet ingredients to add some flair to your #MayaHotcakeArt!
In our case, we used fruits (grapes, orange slices, strawberries) as eyes, hearts, ears for our animals. Time to let those creative juices flow!
Use squeeze bottles for easy design-making!
Have more complex designs in mind? Here’s a handy tip: fill a squeeze bottle with hotcake batter to make some amazing designs!
This gives you more control over the shape and look of your hotcake so you (and even the kids!) can draw fun shapes on the pan.
Tip 2: Draw your art on an oiled-up pan before turning off the heat. So the batter cooks evenly.
Have fun with some color!
Last but definitely not the least, add some food coloring to your batter! With the magic of food coloring, you have virtually no limits to making your hotcake art as eye-popping as possible! Just prepare your Maya Hotcake batter, put some McCormick food coloring, mix, and squeeze away! Imagine what you can do with a squeeze bottle for every color in the rainbow!
Tip 3: Want light and fluffy hotcakes? Keep your batter lumpy!
Our first task was to actually make our own Easter Bunnies! I decided to incorporate some color and add some decor like carrots. Check out how my Maya Hotcake Bunny turned out:
