Mango Galore at Crowne Plaza HK

Ahh, afternoon tea… no other custom could really evoke the British spirit any more than this. But what’s it doing in Hong Kong? Remember that for quite some time, Hong Kong was a British territory. In much the same way as the Philippines inherited the Spanish concept of siesta, Hong Kong absorbed afternoon tea! And yet, just like any other transplanted bit of culture, it’s impossible not to infuse the afternoon tea with local Asian flavors. Which brought us to this — Crowne Plaza Hong Kong’s Mangoholic afternoon tea set!
There are many things to check out at Causeway Bay, We’ve already told you about Lost HK Escape room and now Club @28 (Crowne Plaza’s rooftop bar) is definitely among the top. This summer, even afternoons get livelier with this out-of-the-norm tea set. From 2:30 to 5 PM throughout the summer, the tea set features various varieties of mangoes such as those from Luzon (of course!), Thailand (narcissus mangoes), and Australia (apple mangoes). The mango-themed drinks are perfectly paired with various sweet and savoury treats, fit for all types of taste buds.
Afternoon High Tea tour of Taste
Tina and I are not new to high tea. We actually enjoy it and we have done High Tea in Penang Malaysia as well. For Hongkong, the “tea” portion is not mandatory. If the fresh mango tea is not to your liking, you can check out their Salted Cheese Mango Cocktail! Yes, it’s a fairly unusual drink, but it really works.
Then there’s the sweet treats, such as the Thai-style mango sticky rice. Just the name is mouthwatering, and it turned out to be one of my favorites! Not to be left behind is the Mini Luzon Mango Dome Cake, and the Apple Mango Napoleon. For those looking for something light, there’s the Mango Pomelo Sago Pudding which is a dash of freshness on the taste buds.
Now, as Filipinos we love mangoes, but no one can live on its sweet nectar forever. Hence Club @28 threw in some Macadamia Nuts Chocolate Brownies, with their really rich cocoa taste! It’s a must for any chocolate lover, and pairs well with the mango.
Oh, and going back to mango, it’s not possible to leave without tasting their delectable Mango Baked Alaska! This is my favorite in this entire set! The cool ice cream, moist cake, and oh-so-sweet mango flavor blend together in this one perfect dessert. There’s no such thing as mango overload in this set!
And then, there’s the savory treats. The seared French Foie de Gras with Toast and Diced Mango has a great balance of sweetness and rich buttery taste. It’s definitely a gourmet selection, and it’s very easy to appreciate the decadence. For those steering away from fat and into more healthy foods, there’s the Battered Fish Fillet with Mango Mayonnaise. The flavor of the fish is really brought out by the mayo side, and it has the right balance of flavor and lightness.
If you’re looking for something with a lot more flavor, stay tuned! The Teppanyaki Beef Tenderloin Skewers could be for you. These became my easy favorite among its peers! Those who love sandwiches will also love the Grilled Ham and Cheese Mini Sandwich. Yes, it sounds simple (especially compared to beef or foie de gras), but it is excellently made. So is the Gravlax Salmon on Rye Bread, which really evokes the flavors of its Nordic origins.
Reasons to go for Hong Kong Afternoon Tea
Afternoon teas can either be stiff and formal or chatty and relaxed. Club @28’s version leans towards the latter, but it also has a dash of scenic beauty added in. Of course, we’re at a rooftop bar! All around us was a great panorama of the city and Happy Valley, and the chill atmosphere was great to appreciate both the view and the tea. There was even a great pool to match the view, giving more of those tropical vibes that the mango already invoked. It was a very Instagrammable afternoon — I mean, just look at all those delicacies on colorful parade!
The rooftop is also the perfect place to sit down with friends as you watch the sun go down on the vibrant city. The sunset here is simply beautiful! It’s also the perfect transition into a vibrant nightlife, and you can use this opportunity to recharge if you intend to party out later.
The Mangoholic Afternoon Tea Set is available from Monday to Friday, for 418 HKD good for two people. Every Saturday and Sunday, the price increases to 488 HKD also for 2. These prices are still subject to service charge. Reserving is pretty easy, too — just call Crowne Plaza’s Club @28 at +852 3980 3300.
