Where to Eat in San Juan: Beefalo by Hotrocks (Addition Hills)
Both Karla and I are competitive people. In any event or gathering, we’re usually the first ones to take up any challenge (with a decent reward, of course hehe). And we’re proud to say that almost always, we emerge triumphant and win! Remember that dancing challenge Karla did in Gringo? Cuhhh-razzzy right? But alas, I think there’s one we’ll totally tap out from: The Three Cheese Pounder Burger Challenge by Beefalo by Hotrocks (San Juan). Read on to find out why.
Humble Beginnings of Beefalo by Hotrocks
A pioneer in the Marikina food scene, Beeffalo by Hotrocks has been serving classic family recipes by owners Louie and Girlie Abad and partner Caren Diaz since 2013. The restaurant itself is pegged to serve comfort food and is most famous for their ribs, pizzas, and steaks. ,
And mid last year, Beefalo by Hotrocks finally opened their newest branch in San Juan. Located along Hoover Street, Addition Hills, it features a more curated menu of their bestsellers for family and friends to enjoy.
As to keeping up with times, Louie and Girlie Abad has passed on the baton to their son Gab, who is now in charge of operations. So every now and then, Gab makes sure to inject new food items into the menu while crafting marketing strategies to engage a younger, more vibrant crowd at Beefalo by Hotrocks. And this includes their viral-worthy Three Cheese Pounder Burger Challenge.
The Three Cheese Pounder Burger Challenge
Initially, I readily signed up for the challenge. However, as soon as it stepped out of the kitchen for photos, I just had to say no. It was colossal!
The Three Cheese Pounder Burger (Php 789.00) is basically made of a 10-inch custom-made burger bun, slapped with two half-pound all-beef patties, and slathered on with a special 3-cheese melt sauce in between. It comes with a side of mojos, veggie salad, and a glass of iced tea. It’s easily good for 3-4 people. Blogger friend, @itsemejaysee pushed through with the challenged and lost big time! I tried it myself and was only able to eat a quarter. How sad is that?
So here’s the challenge. Every Friday-Sunday, you can beat this monster by doing the #ThreeCheesePounderChallenge. Finish the burger (sides and all) within 3 minutes and you get it for free. Plus get an additional Php 1000 gift certificate from Beefalo if you’re one of the first 10 to emerge victorious from the challenge.
Pizza, ribs, and everything in between
During lazy days, I always turn to pizza as my comfort food. And on days when I feel extra happy, I love indulging in savory, meaty food as well like ribs, fried chicken, etc. So luck must have been on my side because Beefalo by Hotrocks seems to have it all!
Fully Loaded Nachos (Php 315.00)
I love deconstructed food. I love seeing all the hearty ingredients of my food wonderfully glistening off my plate. And Beefalo’s Fully Loaded Nachos was huge! It was literally a mountain of crunchy corn chip goodness, topped with savory beef taco meat, homemade salsa and oozing with cheese sauce.
Garlic and Mushroom Pizza (Php 190.00)
And speaking of deconstructed, here’s another favorite. It was light and the garlic added a kick to the flavor mix. Really good!
Beeffalo Wings (Php 230.00)
I love chicken wings and I love spicy food. So this spinoff by Beefalo by Hotrocks was also a favorite. I wanted to try both but since there were more eager-spicy-food eaters, I gave way and opted for the sweet one. Sweet, flavorful, and savory!
Baby Back Ribs (Php 790.00)
I’ve eaten a fair amount of mouthwatering ribs in my foodie life and this one definitely makes it to my top 5. It was a full slab of well-seasoned, tender, fall-off-the bone smoked delight. I think the Jack Daniel’s did the trick!
Combination Platter Meals (Php 999.00)
Have the whole gang in tow? Go for Beefalo’s Combination Platter Meals. You and three of your pals can enjoy a hearty platter of their bestselling Baby Back Ribs, Jack Daniel’s Country Style Pork Ribs, Pork Liempo, Chicken Barbecue, and Buttermilk Fried Chicken.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken (Php 280.00)
And speaking of buttermilk chicken, they have it too! Sadly, I’ve already satisfied my hunger with all the meaty goodness I saw so I just took a spoonful of the mash potato. And it was just stellar. Well-seasoned, creamy, and just had the right texture. You can totally skip the rice for this one!
Beefalo’s Dessert Menu
Just when we thought all the gobbling was done, Gab decided to bring out everyone’s Achilles’ heel: dessert! Sampled four of their bestsellers: Crème Brulee (Php 95.00), Brazo de Mercedes (Php 135.00), Frozen Tiramisu (Php 110.00), and Dulce de Leche Cheesecake (PHP 175.00).
I loved the Dulce de Leche Cheesecake best as it was the perfect marriage of the cheesecake’s subtle saltiness and the sweet creamy taste of the dulce de leche. Sadly, I found the creme brulee as the weakest link. I just felt that the top was not torched enough and the flavor was more on the bitter side.
But all in all, I had a very tasty food experience at Beefalo by Hotrocks (San Juan). Hearty flavors, value-for-money portions, and warm ambiance. Will definitely be back to conquer the Three Cheese Pounder Burger Challenge (with vengeance)!
